NINETY FOUR years ago (1911), a number of members of a local tannery
decided to form a singing group from which the Highfield Choir was born.
Our blazer badge still depicts three 'tanners' carrying 'bends' of leather.
Until recently the choir was a member of the North Wales Association of Male
Voice Choirs, (probably influenced by our proximity to North Wales by a small
group of 'exiles' who had worked locally for ICI). This gave us the opportunity
to sing with 1000 voices at the Royal Albert Hall - quite an experience. The choir
is now a member of the National Association of Male Voice Choirs.
The choir tours regularly. We have sung in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Isle
of Man. To spread the word internationally the choir, to name but a few, has
visited Germany, Malta, Spain and Holland. Concerts have always been well
received, especially when we have sung a piece in their native language.
In addition, the choir sings at local venues in aid of various charities. The special
one is always the Christmas Concert which, until last year, was held in the
Queens Hall in Widnes. We have now, however, moved to the newly appointed
Brindley Centre in Runcorn.
The choir is eternally grateful for the work and support of our unsung (no pun
intended) volunteers who comprise of The Fund Raising Group, Front of the House
and The Friends of Highfield. They all deserve a big "thank you".
2005 sees the appointment of our new Musical Director who, I feel sure, will add
to our repertoire and also to our expertise. He will, of course, be supported by
an excellent accompanist whose arrangements often give Highfield that unique quality.
Recruiting is an 'ongoing' task and we are always on the 'look-out' for new
voices. Rehearsals take place each Tuesday and Friday at the Grangeway
Community Centre in Runcorn.
